Transmission Planning Engineer
Central Municipal Power Agency/Services (CMPAS), is looking for a Transmission Planning Engineer. CMPAS serves as a public power, joint action agency working with 12 member-cities and several affiliates in MN, IA, and WI. CMPAS provides comprehensive power supply, transmission, and distribution mapping services. As a MISO transmission owner and MISO and SPP market participant, the Agency offers daily energy scheduling and market-related services. Project by project, CMPAS delivers customized solutions that bring competitive rates to each city we serve.
Minimum Qualifications are Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and three years of electric utility experience. Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Master of Business Administration or equivalent is beneficial.
The person hired in the position will be responsible for assisting the CMPAS team with Agency/member transmission-related business systems. The individual will collaborate, perform and lead reliability and economic driven studies along with providing analysis of complex transmission systems and document and communicate results to the CMPAS Board of Directors and other groups. The person will represent the Agency and member interests on various transmission planning and operations committees, task forces and working groups (ex: MISO).
The best candidates will have a strong understanding of power supply and transmission concepts along with a general knowledge of wholesale energy markets. In addition to attaining at least three years of current electric utility experience, candidates should have at least two years of direct experience with conducting power flow studies using commercial power flow application software (ex: PSS/E, PSLF, MUST, ASPEN, and TARA preferred). The candidate should also have experience and knowledge of electrical substations, transmission lines, and high voltage equipment along with knowledge and understanding of local and federal regulatory requirements and compliance standards (FERC, NERC, and NERC’s reliability regions) that impact grid planning.
Candidates must possess good project management skills, be able to develop and implement necessary work activities, maintain confidentiality and communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and provide essential leadership skills and personnel management experience.
Candidates will have the option of working from one of our two locations: Eden Prairie, MN or Blue Earth, MN.
